For a title that runs you clear out of breath, the text inside leaves readers equally as speechless. I plucked this book up at Calgary airport and could not force myself to put in down until I had journeyed through the entire thing. For that's what this novel is: a journey. Flashing between 100 years meddling in wars to current (rather jaw-dropping) crimes committed by a group of misfits, this novel plays with the past in the most entertaining fashion. Intertwined in our horrific history is an apolitical, areligious, asexual man who cares for nothing more than a good meal and his next spot of vodka. Beautifully simple and craftily clever, this novel will be raved about for centuries to come. |
