The layout for the online magazine "Fiddleback" can be described as simplistic as best. Though the mag appears painfully dull, the content inside is the exact opposite. Fish is one of the most compelling short stories I have ever read. With a clear, strong voice and unique story line, the aftermath of a horrific shark attack is mixed up with the most unsexy sex in a sublime, yet convincing narrative. The immaculate twist at the end had me re-read the entire thing - and I liked it even more the second time through. Try it yourself: https://fiddleblack.org/journal/issue-17/fish
I read this story at your recommendation, and I loved it also! It's hard to imagine how a sex scene could be any unsexier. I think the anglerfish metaphor really works as the anchor (sorry for the cheesy pun) of the story, particularly in this line: "A girl is a host, an ache that holds everything together."
